Ah, snow days. The chance to start the day off slow, carefully plotting how to remove the children from the Xbox for long enough to remind them that there is a frosty world out there, just waiting for them do don coats and explore; and taking advantage of the quiet morning by catching up dishes in the kitchen while listening to a mighty woman speak.
Today’s selection was an interview with Debra Pascali-Bonaro. You might have heard of “Orgasmic Birth: The Best-Kept Secret”. Yep, you guessed it: This birth pro is a master at reframing things in a positive way! If you want to take our culturally-induced panic about childbirth and turn it toward the positive, joyous experience Hollywood doesn’t tell you it really can be, then tune in to her. I’m right there with her on that point, for sure! We have been scared silly, scared right out of seeing the power of a truly unique, human experience. With or without orgasm included, I promise, birth so often does NOT fit the horror images we’ve been force-fed…if we can change around our thinking.
My favorite point of the interview came when Debra described favorite birth tools she has seen, such as athletic mats on the floor, a ladder bolted to the wall for a laboring woman to be able to stretch and grip, and exercise balls. Pascali-Bonaro even described the bed, itself, as a form of athletic equipment! “Hang on it, lean on it, squat on it, but don’t lie down on it, unless you’re on your side for small breaks,” she tells us. Sure, lots of great things happen on beds! But who would have thought of them as exercise equipment for birth?
The point is: a low-intervention birth, is that is your goal, is about being free to move. Use your environment, and explore the things around you to move freely! I will certainly be looking at the tools around me differently from now on, when I am assisting someone at a birth.
