When faced with this question, I think about a return query: Which of the four food groups do you feel is the healthiest? They're all good! In other words, it is the successful blend of nutrients, and the wise use of distinct techniques, that makes for the best health of the body, as it does for the birth. I bring a bag stuffed full of tools and tricks that we can try at any given time, according to how you feel, and following all of our instincts about what might or might not bring about successful relaxation. I'll tell you about some of these things at our prenatal visits, and we can practice some good moves at that time, too.
Even without the bag, though, the best techniques are those that help you to get out of the way of your labor and let it do its job. For some of us, that means distraction; for others, tuning in and listening to what is happening within keeps us balanced and calm. For still others, it's the pep talks and massages from those around us that help to keep us on the even keel that we need. The right combination of techniques will be as individual as the woman who uses them. We will not know for sure until the time comes. That's why I have a slew of alternatives ready to go!
So what do you think will be most helpful to you? Start by thinking about how you handle a migraine, a stubbed toe, your monthly cramps. Do you reach out for others, or turn inward, or perhaps distract yourself? What techniques do you use at those difficult times? This exercise might give you some insight to help start the conversation with your doula.
